This project was initiated by the Conservation Fund as an environmental learning center that would educate visitors to the wonders of the Nanticoke River Watershed, one of the most pristine and undeveloped rivers in the Chesapeake Bay. Conceived as a free classroom set half on land and half on water, The Discovery Center is meant as a place to interpret landscape around the conservation principals of watershed, habitat and natural resources. At the same time, it’s also a place of fun and exploration, a ͞soft͟learning environment meant to engage families, school groups and individuals. At the Discovery Center visitors would get information about the extraordinary natural, cultural and recreational resources of this watershed area before setting off on their own expeditions. The Center would provide direct access to the Nanticoke River with outdoor interpretive displays, links to local trails, a boat launch and a pier. A large gallery with water views would house a permanent exhibit while classrooms would serve as demonstration areas and double as community meeting rooms. Additionally, the Maryland Department of Natural Recourses would maintain a laboratory and offices at the Center.
